Sensex, Nifty consolidate; Tata Steel, Vedanta fall 2%

The market continued to consolidate for the fourth consecutive session despite positive Asian cues. The Sensex declined 50.69 points to 26502.23 and the Nifty fell 18.85 points to 8021.35. The broader markets were also under pressure as the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices slipped around half a percent. 
The market breadth was weak too as about 1413 shares declined against 866 advancing shares on the BSE. Tata Steel lost 2 percent ahead of earnings. Consolidated profit may fall 32.2 percent year-on-year to Rs 851 crore from Rs 1,254 crore, according to a CNBC-TV18 poll. 
Sun Pharma, Vedanta, Axis Bank and Bharti Airtel were other top losers on Sensex, down 1.5-2.5 percent. Infosys, ITC, Maruti, L&T, Tata Motors, Hero Motocorp, HUL, Coal India and NTPC gained 0.4-1.5 percent.

Amidst pressure, the Sensex ended down 37.67 points at 26552.92. The Nifty slipped 20.50 points at 8040.20. About 1255 shares advanced, 1469 shares declined, and 134 shares were unchanged. Tata Motors, M&M, Bajaj Auto, Coal India and Hero MotoCorp were top gainers in the Sensex. ICICI Bank, Reliance, Sun Pharma, GAIL and Lupin were losers.

IDBI Bank has reported flattish growth in profits (up 1.2% YoY to Rs119.5 crore) due to a 30% YoY rise in provisions. The net interest income growth was relatively better as it grew by 14.6% YoY supported by YoY increase in margins.
